Forest Kindergarten

Course Aims

Our Forest Kindergarten training programme models a forest schools approach and is based around child-centred play.

This qualification meets the needs of practitioners who would like to set up regular off-site visits to a local wood or nearby green space for children in their care.

This course recognises the value of woodlands as an integral part of the learning process for Early Learning in Childcare. It has been carefully designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to enable children to learn in an outdoor setting.

Outline of Programme

The course will facilitate candidates to be trained and equipped with the knowledge and processes they need to be able to set up and deliver Forest Kindergarten sessions within their own setting.

The programme is a three-day interactive course which includes planning and preparing the site and enabling exploration which will help children to connect with the natural world.

The award consists of one unit with three outcomes:

• Forest Kindergarten site (the place)
• Planning and Engaging with children and adults (the people)
• Setting up and leading Forest Kindergarten sessions (the pedagogy)

The aim of the course is to enable Early Years Practitioners to organise, safely set up and facilitate Forest Kindergarten sessions.

The qualification has been developed in partnership with the Forestry Commission Scotland and is SQA accredited at SCQF 7 (see HERE)

Duration: 3 hours per week over 6 weeks

Times: Anticipated 4pm to 7pm but can flex to group needs
