Twenty-one Students from the West of Scotland College, Design & Architecture department submitted designs for a competition, co-ordinated by West Dunbartonshire Council’s development partner hub West Scotland. The brief was to create a Directory Sign for - thirteen new Workshops units being developed in the Vale of Leven Industrial Estate. The winning entries design will be built as part of the project.
A small ceremony was held on Thursday at hub West Scotland’s office, where Depute Provost Councillor Millar led the proceedings. The winner was announced as Rachel Lowe, an HNC Interior Design student from Clydebank. The judging panel commented that her design for the site sign board was tremendous, and took into consideration the materials and setting of the workshops.
The judging panel, included representatives from West Dunbartonshire Council, hub West Scotland, Heron Bros and project Architects Hypostyle, along with Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, were impressed with the quality of the designs submitted.
Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, Convener for Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development Committee, said: “All of the judging panel were delighted to choose Rachel’s design as the winner of the competition. It is an extremely eye-catching sign and will provide a striking entrance to the 13 new workshops being created in Vale of Leven Industrial Estate. Now that work is under way at the site, it will not be long before Rachel is able to see her hard work brought to life.”
The winner and two runners up were presented with vouchers to spend at an art store, kindly donated by the main contractor, Heron Bros. The experience has been fantastic for all students involved, with Angela Pignatelli, Assistant Principal at West College Scotland commenting,
““The partnership with Hub West, the Council, the Contractors, the Architecture practice and West College Scotland could not have gone more smoothly. We are immensely proud of the students and staff involved in this live architecture project and grateful to our partners for their unerring support throughout the design process. For the students, the exposure to real clients working to real deadlines and budgets has been invaluable. They have developed key employability skills throughout the stages which have made them far more aware of the demands of industry.
Very few students can cite that their design concepts go to full construction stage and, for that, we’d like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all our partners.”
