Apprentice in bricklaying, Karmen is an ambitious young woman who loves everything about house building.
“I get a real sense of achievement every single day when I think of a family living in a home I’ve helped build”, Karmen says.
Speaking out during the National Apprenticeship Week (9 to 13 March 2015), Karmen stressed her determination to face the challenges for women working in this male-dominated industry:
“I love proving everyone wrong when I’m able to do everything the guys are doing on site”
Karmen is currently following our NPA Construction – Bricklaying course and working as an apprentice at Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK's largest residential developers. She has the ambition to complete her four-year apprenticeship and continue her career at Taylor Wimpey before, one day, starting her own business. She asserts:
“I hope to start my own company that encourages more women into the construction industry”
Tommy Campbell, Head of Sector – Construction, is very proud of Karmen’s work and points out the College’s commitment to help each and every students achieve their ambitions:
“Karmen is one of many young ladies within our Construction sector. She has displayed excellent employability skills as well as the bricklaying expertise she is developing at the College. Our Construction sector prides itself on its commitment to deliver courses accessible to everyone. Over our three campuses, we deliver a wide range of Construction programmes such as schools, pre-apprenticeship, SVQ apprenticeship and HNC Construction Management. All of these are accessible to all.”
