West College Scotland is committed to Modern Apprenticeships and over the past three years has assisted in delivering over 500 apprentices within a number of key industries. Included in this impressive figure, 15 of our own MAs have been successful in securing jobs in the College on completion of their apprenticeship.
Danny Walls, ex MA, now Online Services Assistant at West College Scotland said: ‘I had a couple of previous jobs and went to college for a year before starting my Apprenticeship. It seemed like a great opportunity to gain a qualification and work experience at the same time - the possibility of getting a full time job was too good to miss.’
Danny knew that his MA was a great way to get experience in a real working environment while gaining relevant knowledge along the way.
Danny commented: ‘My MA provided me with great experience in working in a team; working in an office environment also gave me an overview of how the college works -which was a great head start to have.’
Danny, Andrew and Stephanie (pictured above) who completed their apprenticeships last year, had secured College jobs by November.
Andrew Clark , ex MA, now Quality and Information Administrator added: ‘The good thing was support was continuously available during my apprenticeship .
In my job there are a variety of challenges, such as a high level of workload requiring consistent prioritisation and problem solving. You constantly have to adapt to change, so you need to be able to work in a high paced work environment. I like that no day is the same; it keeps my job interesting and keeps me on my toes.’
Both Danny and Andrew had the opportunity of a MA exchange programme late September , where alongside two other College MAs visited Finland as part of a two week Leonardo work experience exchange. In March this year the College welcomed ten Finish students to our three campuses.
Jere Riekki, 19 year old exchange student from the Vaasa Vocational Institute, Finland said:
‘It’s been really nice to be at the College and I’m sad to be going back home. I’ve been working closely with the staff here and learning new skills such as database management. I’ve enjoyed being part of the WCS team and I feel my English has improved greatly in a short space of time.’
