As part of their course unit ‘Working with others’, National 4 Care and Prepare to Care students at WCS Greenock Campus (picture above) decided to get involved in a charity event. Inspired by Blythswood Care’s action towards providing practical help, love and support for those in need, they decided to take part in their ‘Shoe Box Appeal’. One of the students explains:
Watching the video about the Appeal made us realise that not everyone is fortunate in life and that by donating a box full of goods we could make someone’s life a bit better.
Kate Kennedy, Health & Social Care Lecturer at our Greenock Campus, fully supported the initiative of her students. She says:
This type of event ties into the ethos of our department which is ‘Care and Life Sciences’. I feel it encourages students to think about the basic needs of others that are not being met. By being involved in this appeal, students realise they will put a smile on people’s faces as they open their box and realise that others in this world do care.
The students contacted local companies for donations. The Greenock Lloyds Pharmacy, the Port Glasgow Bowling Club and SCOTMID Co-operative were delighted to support the worthwhile cause by donating goods, boxes and wrapping paper.
Many College staff members also supported the initiative, which spread across campuses. When Christine Morton, Childhood Practice Lecturer at Clydebank heard about her colleague’s class project, she was very keen to join in – and so were her Early Education & Childcare students (picture below). Christine says:
The students participated enthusiastically in this worthwhile cause and were very generous with their time and contributions
One of the Clydebank students said: “I learned I could make children happy and make a difference”.
Last Friday, Kate and her students delivered all that they had collected to the Blythswood Care depot: a total of around 80 shoe boxes plus a selection of items to be used by the organisation to top up boxes (picture below). Needless to say, the local Blythswood Care Representatives were delighted to receive this significant help towards their cause.
