Students on the College’s ‘Step 2’ programme are currently studying a unit on ‘People and Society’, including classes on local politics and the impact of the bedroom tax. Who better to learn from than Westminster’s youngest MP - Paisley’s Mhairi Black.

The students were quick to express their enthusiasm for Mhairi’s talk. Victoria Quinn said "I really enjoyed it. It was worth her time and ours.” While Joshua Allison thought "It was a good opportunity - I learned a lot".

Heather Morrison is Curriculum Enhancement Lecturer for Learner Development at the College, and was delighted that Mhairi took the time to visit the class

“It was great afternoon. At first, the students didn't think they knew much about politics, but after meeting Mhari they realised they knew more than they thought. She managed to keep their attention for an hour, which is sometimes a challenge – particularly for a politician.”

“She wanted to show them that politics is "not full of old men" and that it can really be interesting and accessible. Mhari related well to the students and we would certainly have her back.”

Mhairi was delighted to share her enthusiasm for politics, and to see the great work the College’s Learner Development course does.

“It is truly great to visit West College Scotland’s Paisley campus and meet the Step 2 Students and their Lecturers. I am very grateful to the college for inviting me along.

“This programme is an essential gateway to work for those who have had difficulty with the standard school and classroom environment and the skills this programme teaches are invaluable for those hoping to enter the workplace.”

After speaking, Mhairi took the time to grab a few selfies with the students, and even lecturer Heather! This was a fun conclusion to a relaxed but informative afternoon, with Mhairi’s down to earth nature helping the students appreciate politics in a whole new way.
