Pecha Kucha is presentation, but not as you know it. Japanese for ‘chit-chat’, this is a fun, quick-fire format delivered in a social setting, and a far cry from the boring, stuffy presentations we’ve become accustomed to. Pecha Kucha are 20 slides of 20 seconds, making a presentation last only 6 minutes 40 seconds. It started in Tokyo, but has swiftly made its way to over 800 cities across the world, and now Glasgow, thanks to West College Scotland HND Media students.
The event took place in Glasgow City Centre, in the relaxed setting of the Old Hairdresser’s. With an audience of school leavers, mature students, and the public, West College Scotland students and lecturers showcased their current projects and topics they love.
Speakers on the night had a range of inspiring and exciting topics to discuss.
This included a presentation on 'The Life of a Charity Music Shop' by Michael Slevin, on Bollywood by Sami Sharma, and on 'Jaz' by Eilidh McGown.
Rikki-Lee Burton spoke for 6 minutes 40 seconds on his media production company ‘Vivified Productions’. Rikki spoke about his work as a camera operator at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Insomnia Gaming Festival and Dumbarton Football club and how to create high-quality video content including gameplay highlight clips.
Vivified were also on site to film the event, creating a video to document the night.
Audience members were encouraged to soak up the atmosphere and speak to presenters about their projects, and student life at West College Scotland, in the welcoming and open setting. This was a great opportunity for prospective students to learn more about the experiences available at West College Scotland, direct from those involved.
The event was organised by HND Media Student, and founder of Hi-Ex Studios, Michael Slevin, who was delighted with how things went.
"It was fantastic to see the inaugural Creative Futures Pecha Kucha do so well. I spoke to many of the attendees afterwards and they all really enjoyed it, with some even interested in studying at WCS once they leave school.”
It was a great experience planning the event and organising the speakers and I'm glad that everyone who came along had fun. Here's to the next one!"
