Sophia is a first year pupil at Hyndland Secondary, in Glasgow’s West End and she created Broomy the Fox for a competition run by HND Media students at West College Scotland’s Clydebank Campus.  The brief set by the club and College was to design a mascot which would define the ethos of Broomhill Sports Club, which aims to encourage participation by boys and girls in enjoyable activities that promote health and well-being.

Steven Murphy, is a final year student at West College Scotland in Clydebank, and helped run the competition.

"The standard of entries was very high, but Broomy stood out.  I’m sure he’ll appeal to both boys and girls."

It’s been a good year for Fox mascots, as Filbert the Fox led Leicester City to victory in the English Premier League. Although Filbert and Broomy are unrelated, Sophie hopes he can do the same for BSC.

“I came up with the idea of drawing a fox because foxes are very common in Hyndland. I also chose a fox because foxes are fast and something to be reckoned with! It’s also a good match because the BSC football team train on the pitches right next to a café called The Hyndland Fox.”

Sophia was delighted and surprised to win.

“I was really excited that I had won the competition - I didn't think I would win but I was pleasantly surprised!”

Director of Broomhill Sports Club, Steve Prince, welcome the latest addition to the team.

“I love the mascot design by Sophia, she has captured the essence of sport  and our sports club. I can see Broomy playing Netball, Football or running a race. I look forward to turning Sophia’s wonderful and imaginative creation into life.
