Whilst artists such as Amy MacDonald, Razorlight and the Kaiser Chiefs entertained the crowds, West College Scotland’s Music Business students were behind the scenes, ensuring that it all went without a hitch.
With one of the festivals main organiser, Gavin Simpson doubling up as a Lecturer the students were given the incredible opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on work experience, which would seen them brushing shoulders with some of the country’s best entertainers.
Speaking to Gavin about the event he said, “This is the second year that we have given the students the opportunity to get involved, but this year it was on a much larger scale. Introducing a second stage to the festival allowed us to pass the reigns over to the students.'
As well as sourcing up-and-coming talents for the second stage, the students were given the opportunity to work alongside the festivals stage managers, artist liaisons and media teams.
Twenty-two year old student, Jamie McClafferty who took on the role of Stage Manager for the breakout stage said,
It was one of the best weekends of my life.
Being able to transfer the skills learned in college to a live project like this was fantastic. Working with artists big and small was a privilege and something I hope to do more of in the future.”
Gaining confidence in her abilities, 18 year old student, Carolyn Clarke believes that obtaining experiences like this can only positively impact her future “being given the opportunity to work alongside and learn from industry professionals is amazing and not something everyone gets the opportunity to do. I’ve definitely grown in confidence and feel much more comfortable in my abilities. I’ve made some great contacts which I know will be useful in the future.”
Student Adam Beaton concluded, “I thoroughly enjoyed working at the festive and can’t wait to return next year.”
Not only did the students impress their lecturers they made a lasting impression on the festival staff and artists, Gavin said, “The response to our students has been phenomenal, everyone from the staff and artists were delighted with the first class professional services that they provided.
I’m thrilled to have received such positive feedback and look forward to continuing this working partnership again next year.
