The Competition provides pupils aged 7 to 13 with an outstanding opportunity to work on STEM projects with the support of sponsor organisations. As they prepare for the Competition, pupils get to build their skills and grow their confidence in project-based work. The national Final comes to reward their hard work and recognise their talent.
Our Engineering Departments, together with Developing the Young Workforce – West team, worked with schools across the West Region throughout the year to take part in this exciting Competition and prepare for the big event.
The Scottish Final was organised and hosted by the Energy Skills Partnership and held in Perth last Tuesday 13th June. Finalists were invited to compete for a number of exciting prizes in three STEM challenges:
- The Big Bang Science Competition
- The Big Bang Engineering Competition
- National Final of the Bloodhound Scotland Rocket Car Challenge

The Big Bang Event in Perth was a huge success. The Competition has been extremely well supported by West Region stakeholders and, thanks to this, we were able to get a great level of participation from local schools. The challenges really got pupils engaged into STEM and we could feel their level of excitement on the day.
In addition to hosting the Competition’s final, the Big Bang event enabled teachers and other education professionals to meet companies and organisations working in STEM fields. These supporters brought STEM subjects to life with engaging interactive activities – yet another great way to get pupils enthused about STEM.
