With a packed itinerary the students visited some of Berlin’s top attraction including: the Reichstag, DDR Museum and the BMW Motorbike Factory where robotics are being used to build the latest technology.

Accompanying the students was course Lecturer, Fiona Rushton, “The trip to Berlin was a great opportunity for the students to visit one of Europe’s modern cities and a chance to learn more about the history of computer games and German culture.”

But the main attraction for the students studying at HNC and HND level was the Compterspielemuseum, the first ever museum for computer games in the world. With an exhibition of retro gaming consoles and arcade games, and various displays on the history of computer games and innovators, the students had an array of inspiration for their coursework on the history and evolution of computer games.

A successful trip on many levels, Fiona commented, “Apart from the educational benefits, for some this was their first trip abroad, which I think they all agreed was a fantastic opportunity allowing them to experience different cultures and new life experiences.”

HNC students Dylan Cox and Adam Taylor both thoroughly enjoyed the trip and agreed that the highlight was the visit to the Computerspielemuseum. Dylan said, “I enjoyed the fact that there was so many older consoles that were still playable and had games such as Pong in the setting of a 70’s house – it was really cool.”

Adam who is fascinated with the history of gaming particularly like the Magnavox Odyssey said, “Being able to explore some of the older consoles and see them in real life was great.

It’s given me an appreciation for how far gaming has developed over the last 30 years.
