The Prince’s Trust Team 55 recently completed their 12 week community development programme recently at our Clydebank Campus with huge success. This excellent programme has been set up to help young adults gain confidence and experience. On completion of the course, the students receive a nationally recognised qualification.
This year Team 55 carried out their community project at the RSPB in Lochwinnoch. Here they removed a plant called Himalayan Balsam. This particular species is an invasive shrub which prevents our native wild flowers from growing. The team also removed pond dipping benches and replaced them with new ones. Kirsty Reid, the Depute Team Leader of Prince’s Trust said “This was a particularly big job as the team had to dig quite deep trenches to insert the new ones.”
For their Team Challenge the team carried out work at Midgavin Animal Rescue. This is an organisation that rescues mistreated and retired horses. It also rescues ex battery chickens. The team worked at Midgavin to remove ragwort from the fields ; this is a shrub that is particularly poisonous to horses.
Team 55 member, Peter McLinton, 18 from Clydebank said of the project,
The course has changed my life and gave me a great start into the world of study and employment. I am hoping now to gain a place on the pre apprentice electrical engineering programme at West College Scotland’s Clydebank Campus.
The team did spectacularly well and now moving on to bigger and better things.
