Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging millions of children across 64 different countries, making it the largest environmental schools programme in the world!
Vicky Meechan, Paisley Nursery Depute Manager said:
I am delighted with the work, dedication and enthusiasm that staff, students and children have put in to support us in achieving the Eco schools green flag status. Participation in topics such as recycling, litter picking and health and wellbeing has provided invaluable learning for the children and the wider college community.
The WCS Nursery Eco committee consists of children, parents, staff and other members of the college community.
One of the main focuses for this year was recycling and litter. Nursery staff arranged for monthly litter picks to be carried out and they also participated in the clean Renfrewshire campaign with the support of local street wardens where they collected 4 bin bags of rubbish!
Last year the committee decided to work on the themes of Litter, health and well-being, recycling and school grounds.
The Nursery promoted the health benefits of drinking clean water and encouraging the children to use reusable water bottles. In addition to this, they participated in the “Rag Bag” scheme, and have collected 350kg of clothing this year so far – WOW. This scheme was extended to the Paisley Campus by introducing clothing collection bins at the campus reception area.
Not only that, but the children were encouraged to recycle lunch and snack packaging. They even recycled plastic bottles to create a greenhouse!
The children now participate in monthly litter picks and encourage parents, staff and students to join us. Children are becoming more aware of litter and the problems it causes. On average they collect 1-2 bin bags per collection!
Audrey Cumberford, Principal and Chief Executive at West College Scotland added:
Participating in the Eco Schools initiative goes well beyond simply carrying out a range of activities and achieving our Green Flag. The nursery team, the children and parents are helping to raise awareness and change behaviours and attitudes of all of our staff and students. As Scotland’s largest regional college the impact of the work they do is truly significant. Their contribution to ‘how we do things’ at West College Scotland is not only important but is hugely valued. A team approach is at the heart of what they do and achieve – engaging a wide range of staff and students from across our whole College.
