“It allowed me to walk away from school with many benefits”.
Undertaking a Foundation Apprenticeship is a big step, but one which Iona Mitchell is glad she took. Iona has recently completed her Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare at West College Scotland. Not only did she thoroughly enjoy her studies, but Iona was also nominated for a Scottish Apprenticeship Award in light of her hard work and dedication.
The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards recognise talented and promising individuals throughout the whole of Scotland. Being nominated in the Foundation Apprentice of the Year category was an impressive feat, and Iona reached the final four out of hundreds of nominations. Being recognised in this way undoubtedly validates Iona’s place in the care industry, and it certainly sounds like she is a worthy nominee. Christine Dougan, Healthcare lecturer at West College Scotland, describes Iona as “an extraordinary young woman”, saying she has “blossomed and grown into a very responsible and mature person with the right qualities and values for a career in support and care”.
Iona credits her Foundation Apprenticeship with giving her the experience necessary for a career in the care industry, adding that it built her confidence in the workplace immensely. Now continuing her studies in Social Care, the future looks bright for Iona, and the team at West College Scotland wishes her the best of luck.
