West College Scotland are delighted to announce that our students scooped an amazing 18 Gold, Silver and Bronze places at the UK’s largest student hairdressing, make-up and beauty competition, Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) National Heat at Blackpool Winter Gardens in March. This was following their previous success scooping 9 awards at the Regional heat held at Edinburgh College, Granton Campus in February.

Matthew Frearson, 22 from Helensburgh who is studying NC Media Makeup was delighted to place 3rd in 18+ Face Painting said of the Competition,

“This has been one of the most stressful, funny, exciting and tiring weekend I've had in a long time!“

Cara Tonfoni, 17 from Erskine who is studying Introduction to Fashion Makeup at our Clydebank campus and placed Silver in the 14+ Face Painting category commented of her experience,

“The competition gave me more confidence and improved my speed of face-painting. I loved the atmosphere and seeing all the different competitions taking place.”

She continued, “The standard was really high, and this has made me want to work harder and improve on my skills. I can’t wait to go back next year and compete, and it let me have the opportunity to meet students from other classes”

Neneh Panayides, 22 from Bishopton who is studying HND Beauty Therapy at our Paisley Campus, shared a positive experience saying,

“I really enjoyed the AHT competition as it gave me a good insight into the competition scene, and now I want to compete again!  I really enjoyed the experience and I learnt a lot. I loved seeing all the other categories compete, it was a great 2 days.”

Neneh was delighted to win 2nd place in the Facials and Eye Service categories at the National competition.

Additional Direct Entry Competitions in Hair, Beauty and Make Up took place over this fiercely competitive two-day event, giving students the opportunity to enter other similar competitions. This provided a welcome second chance for success or for those who want to really push themselves by entering multiple competitions.

Janet Munn, Lecturer said of the event,

“The AHT National Competitions are a great platform for students to experience the fantastic skill levels and creativity from competitors North and South of the border. It’s a huge learning curve and confidence booster that encourages students to find their inner competitive streak and motivation to enter time and time again to achieve their goals.”

Janet spoke of the added benefits to the students involved commenting,

“This is a fantastic opportunity to build great working relationships with students from other courses and promotes good team building skills. It’s so nice to see those relationships continue within the college and see the students encourage and support one another throughout their coursework. There’s already some great planning going on for next year’s event!”

Well done to all of our students who competed!
