The Learning and Work Institute is working in partnership with The Carers Federation to improve the support that young adult carers receive in further education.
Starting in late 2019, this three-year project, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, involves the Learning and Work Institute working with sixty further education colleges, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The project sees Colleges receive tailored one-to-one support to review their provision for young adult carers and implement actions that will enable them to achieve better outcomes.
Completion of the accreditation will enable the College to:
- Improve support for young adult carers, thereby potentially increasing retention, attendance and achievement rates.
- Demonstrate to external agencies and potential students a commitment to tailoring support to meet the needs of all learners.
- Evidence an awareness of the challenges faced by young adult carers in education and commitment to improving their experiences and opportunities.
Assistant Principal, Student, Life and Skills, Iain Forster-Smith, commented, “Many students combine their college studies with caring. We are very aware that student carers can face additional challenges, balancing their caring responsibilities with the demands of their course.
That is why we have embarked on this new journey with Learning and Work Institute and The Carers Federation to enhance our support and understanding to ensure West College Scotland is providing the best and relevant support we possibly can.
