The students who were studying a mix of courses at our Clydebank and Greenock campuses including NC Beauty & Aesthetics with Nails, HNC & HND Fashion Make-up, MA Hairdressing and NC 6 Make Up Artistry were delighted to take part, especially with the ongoing government restrictions due to the pandemic. They had challenges to overcome along the way, even having to use themselves as models for the looks to showcase their work.
The Association of Hairdressers & Therapists, which was founded in 1963 by a group of hairdressing teachers as a national network of like-minded specialists who exchanged good practice and support, took steps to support colleges and training providers during the pandemic to continue to compete by allowing all of this year’s area competitions to be purely photographic entry.
The students were dedicated to showcasing their skills and developed their entries at home and in college to submit their images for consideration, against fellow students from all over the country.
12 of our talented students were placed across a range of competitive categories, from Creative Nails to Body Painting and creating incredible looks in makeup from Bridal to classic 1920’s.
NC6 Make Up Artistry student, Shiobhan Gallagher 27, from Clydebank said of the experience,
“During such a difficult year, preparing for the competition really helped keep me motivated and gave me something to look forward to. It helped improve my skills and I’m so glad all the hard work paid off.”
Stephanie Mcgettigan 32, HNC Fashion Make Up student from Clydebank, agreed this saying, “Participating in the competition was not something I would normally have jumped at the chance to do. I just didn’t have the confidence but with encouragement and guidance from my lecturers I went for it and I’m so glad I did. I had a ball!”
Danielle Metcalf, 32, from Dunoon, who is studying NC Beauty & Aesthetics with Nails said of the experience,
"I really enjoyed challenging myself and was thrilled with the end result and winning was an added bonus. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity - thank you to my lecturers!"
The department were immensely proud of the students success at this year’s competition with Caroline Cullen CEL Beauty Therapy commenting, "I was so proud to see the results from all of the West College Scotland students , all the hard work was definitely worth it."
Janet Munn, Lecturer for Hairdressing & Makeup Artistry at West College Scotland said,
“The standard of work from the students this year was fabulous. We were placed in every competition category that we entered which was an amazing achievement. We are so proud of all of our students.”
Wendy Sheridan-Price, Head of Sector - Hair, Beauty and Makeup Artistry said of the students success, "As a Sector we aim to provide competition opportunities for our students. Against the backdrop of the pandemic, our lecturers and students stepped up to the challenge. What an achievement. Well done everyone. Immensely proud of you all. "
