Former design student Callum Cairns who runs JKS Clyde in Paisley and Garelochhead, approached the College about the collaboration to provide students with a live client project.
The brief was to create an original, distinctive, and impactful logo that represents the club’s values and commitment to excellence in Karate training. Callum asked that the logo resonate with traditional martial arts aesthetics and modern design sensibilities.
The creation of an additional logo for the JKS Clyde ‘Wee Warriors’ was requested which would be aimed at children aged 4-6. The vision: to be cute but fierce and sit well alongside the main logo.
Graphic Design Lecturer, Debbie Dennett commented, “It has been a pleasure to start the new academic year with a live project for the students.
Working to very tight deadlines the students get a great energy boost for their creative process.
‘Each student got the opportunity to present their research and initial ideas to Callum who in turn gave them very constructive individual feedback to act on.
The work they have produced in such a short period of time has really impressed the team here at the Paisley campus, and more importantly Callum from JKS Clyde.
‘Working on a live project is an essential learning experience for students, from presenting to the clients to asking questions about the brief and taking on feedback – all essential skills for their future careers in the creative industries.”
Callum Cairns, Director of JKS Karate said, “What could be a better way to get JKS Clyde involved with the local community, than to give local students the opportunity to showcase their work in the community.
I have been taken back with some of the unique and creative designs that the students have come up with, using their impressive graphic design skills to bring the information in their briefing to life.
'The lectures at West have been great and were as warm and welcoming as I remember. I took real pleasure in meeting each and every one of the talented students of the HNC Graphic design course and I just can’t wait to unveil the winners and our new club logos.”
