Few industries shape our nation in the way civil engineering does. This thriving industry drives Scotland’s economic growth, working across the roads, rail, water and power sectors; delivering the infrastructure our businesses and communities in Scotland rely on.
Employing over 30,000 workers and with £8.5billion worth of infrastructure projects scheduled in Scotland over the next decade, CECA Scotland together with the wider industry has created a pioneering training academy as a pathway to facilitate a route into employment and start a career for life.
West College Scotland is proud to be one of 5 Scottish colleges who have partnered with the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) to deliver our new NPA in Construction Operations. Championing inclusivity and diversity in the sector, this 18-week programme aimed directly at school leavers has no entry requirements and applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The course also guarantees a definite job interview on successful competition.
Taking an innovative approach to learning, the Academy offers learners the opportunity to get hands-on with a practical course delivered outdoors. Covering all aspects of health, wellbeing and working safety, the programme focuses on ground related works such as finding services, digging and reinstating ground, working with concrete, kerbs and drainage.
Dr Lee Coutts, Assistant Principal - Creativity, Technology & Skills at West said,
“The creation of a skilled civil engineering workforce is essential for Scotland’s future economy. West College Scotland is proud to partner with CECA and local contractors on this pioneering programme, creating a pipeline of talent to support the country’s ever-growing infrastructure and provide an exciting career opportunity for local young people in our community.”
