Transforming empty storefronts into a gallery of captivating large-format vinyl displays, this exhibition showcases original photography from the students’ Graded Unit projects. The photographs, which range from intimate portraits to striking urban and nature scenes, reflect the dedication and skill of each student as they step into professional careers.

The exhibition launched earlier this month, with students joined by friends, family, and staff to celebrate their work.

Julie Cooper, Curriculum Enhancement Lecturer, highlighted the impact of this exhibition for both the students and the community: “This exhibition is an outstanding opportunity for our students to present their skills to the local community. They’re an incredibly talented group, and it’s been a true pleasure to watch them grow as artists.

Their creativity, dedication, and hard work radiate from every photo on display, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

‘Repurposing unused spaces as creative venues gives students a unique chance to showcase their specialisms and even launch their own businesses.

It’s also wonderful to support the local high street, helping to bring more footfall into these spaces and providing a boost for small businesses.

Among the exhibitors is Richard Jezek, whose photographic series captures people immersed in their personal passions and hobbies. Reflecting on his project, Richard said, “The photos on display are from my Graded Unit project, which I worked on for half a year.

In my photos, I focused on people and their passions or hobbies that they live for and enjoy. I approached each person individually and tried to create a style that captured their passion and personality.

'My work was partly inspired by local photographer Graeme Hewitson, with whom our class had a workshop in the past and whose work I have been following for some time. Gradually, my original plan evolved, and I developed a style that resulted in many interesting photos, thanks to the dedication of my ten volunteer models. It was the hardest and longest project I've ever done, and I owe a huge thanks to each of them.”

The Paisley Shopping Centre, located in the heart of the town, is an ideal setting for this exhibition, allowing the work of these students to gain local exposure and potentially connect with future clients. Richard added,

Being almost local, this is great exposure for me as a photographer, and I hope it will bring me potential customers and opportunities.

'Artwork like this is a way to attract more people’s attention, which the Paisley Centre needs. I’m also thrilled to be part of the Big Art Show exhibition here in the same building, showcasing another photo from this project.”

The exhibition will remain on display in the Paisley Shopping Centre for several months, offering the public time to explore these works. Each photograph is accompanied by a QR code, giving visitors the option to learn more about each photographer or contact them directly for potential projects.
