Overview
What will I learn?
If you are looking for a career in early learning and childcare sector, this could be the course for you. This course prepares you to work effectively in a wide range of Childhood Practice settings or pursue further study for example, within Childhood Practice or Primary Education.
Our lecturing team who have a wealth of experience of working in the childhood practice field, will support your learning in the following areas:
- Pedagogy in Practice
- Leadership
- Current Legislation, Policy and Guidance
- Developing Reflective Practice
This course also includes a childhood practice placement (two days a week) – where you will have the opportunity to relate theory to practice.
You will also be able to register with the Scottish Social Services Council at practitioner level
What qualifications do I need?
You will need an NC qualification in a care-related subject, such as NC Early Education and Childcare or NC Education Support Assistance. Or two Highers at grade A-C, preferably including English.
You will also be considered if you have successfully completed either Social Services Children & Young People Foundation Apprenticeship & 1 Higher preferably English or Social Services & Healthcare Foundation Apprenticeship & 1 Higher preferably English
For a place on the course, you will need experience of working/volunteering in a childcare/ related setting.
You should have a real interest in the Practitioner role, working with children and families
You will be required to submit a personal statement and attend an interview. You must be eligible to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
What can I do after?
After successfully completing the course you will have, the skills needed to register at practitioner level with the Scottish Social Services Council and work in early learning and childcare centres, NHS and Childminding.

- HND Childhood Practice
- BA Childhood Studies/Practice
- BEd Early Years
- BA/Diploma Education and Social Services

This course will be delivered via face-to-face learning on campus and there may be some opportunities for remote learning off-campus and digital learning approaches.
