Learner Development
Overview
Why study at West?
Our Learner Development courses are suitable for anyone who has had additional support for learning at school. Step 1 is an entry level course and is aimed at those who are capable of working at Level 3 and who feel they aren’t ready to access a mainstream course yet. Students who successfully complete the Step 1 course can progress to other courses within or outside the department. Many students who have successfully completed this course have gone on to spend another three years at college.
What will I learn?
This is a one year course for school leavers who would benefit from additional support in order to help them make future progression into a mainstream course and/or employment.
Course content will include:
- Building your Employability Skills
- Working with Others
- Developing Meta Skills
- IT Including how to Access a Remote Curriculum
Optional vocational subjects that'll help you develop practical and work-related skills
What qualifications do I need?
This course is designed for school leavers. You should be an independent traveller or working towards independent travel. You must show you're working at SCQF level 3 and be able to communicate at this level.
For a place on the course you'll need to attend a taster programme and interview and show us that you're enthusiastic about working in a team and developing new skills. Successful applicants will usually have completed the Step link programme so if you are interested in coming to Step 1 in August you should speak to your pastoral care teacher now.
What can I do after?
After successfully completing this course you can develop your skills further by studying another course, such as:
- Step 2
- Steps2work
- Vocational Mainstream Course
SCQF 3
