Overview
Why Study at West?
At WCS we’ll help you take your first steps on the road to an exciting and stimulating career in the Film & Television industry. You will be taught by industry experienced staff, and from the outset, you will be involved in a variety of hands-on projects designed to help you develop the basic knowledge and skills involved in television/film making, as well as photography.
What will I learn?
Working both on location and in our recently upgraded Television studio, you will learn:
- Scriptwriting
- To Understand and Respond to a Creative Brief
- Directing a Single Camera
- Video Camera Skills
- Sound Recording
- Editing
- Lighting
- Multi-camera Studio Production
- Photography
- Digital Imaging
This practical, entry-level course will give you the opportunity to develop the variety of basic skills associated with Television, Photography and Digital Film making. You will learn Video Camera techniques, Sound Recording skills, Editing and Scriptwriting along with basic photography and digital imaging. This is a hands-on course that will prepare you for progression to HNC or HND study.
This course is part of a suite of Creative Industry qualifications, where along with learning focussed TV & Photo skills listed above, you will also develop a range of entrepreneurial skills, helping you to become more employable across all sectors of the Creative Industries. You will also have the opportunity to take part in our flexible NC provision should you wish, where you can choose a mix of any modules from the range of Creative Industries NC courses we run at both Clydebank and Greenock campuses, and create a course unique to you and your interests, building your own timetable along the way.

What qualifications do I need?
No formal qualifications are required for you to gain entry to this course. However, any qualifications you have will be discussed at your interview and any you hold at SCQF level 5 or above will greatly enhance your chances of being accepted on to the course.
Regardless of your current qualifications, the interview will be most important, where you will be expected to demonstrate a real and genuine interest and passion for the media and film making and TV production in particular.
What can I do after?
Successful students can progress onto a number of HNC level courses within Creative Industries such as:
- HNC in Television (Next Gen)
- HNC Media & Communication
- HNC Sound Production
- HNC Photography

Duration: 1 year
This course can be taken either full time or part time – there are many flexible options available to you as to when and how long you can take to complete this course. This can all be discussed with you at interview.
