West caught up with Abbie Boyd who recently completed the Level 5 in Health and Social Care and here’s what she had to say about it.

“The course is a great steppingstone to a career in Health and Social Care. It can lead to further study at Level 6 or Childcare. With three core subjects (values and principles, human development and behavior and social influences), you learn the basic yet more important parts of the job. With supporting subjects in first aid, the human body and influences on mental health and wellbeing you’re constantly developing and improving your skills, not only those learned in care.

‘There is assignment throughout the course, and an external exam and project to complete, focusing on the three core subjects.

Although it may all seem a bit daunting, the lecturers are a great support and aim to give you the most out of your time at the College.

'There is a guidance class in each block, which gives you the opportunity to express any concerns, question and worries about anything - academic or personal.

Your individual needs are always met by the staff and things can be tailored to best suit you. How do I know this? I had to take two months off last year and stayed up to date with the lessons. Emails, video calls and online work meant that even though I wasn’t physically there, I kept on top of the lessons. With the help I received from lecturers, I passed with an A.

Your lecturers want you to succeed as much as you do! It is a fantastic way to make friends and expand your social circle.

'I have met some of my best friends through this course, who also helped me to reach that A.

If I can do it, so can you!”
