Eighteen-year-old Connor Macadie from Port Glasgow is just finishing his HNC Applied Science course at West College Scotland before he continues his studies at UHI in the Autumn. Let’s find out a bit more about his College journey!
When Connor finished school, he was struggling to find a course, but after attending an Open day at the College and speaking to some of the teaching staff he realised that Science was what he was really interested in. He said: ‘I love Physics and Maths and this particular course at Clydebank focused on the Physics side of Applied Science. Speaking to the staff helping at the event made me feel comfortable about going to the College, everyone was friendly and approachable.’
Despite the global pandemic Connor has been on to campus between lockdowns to conduct some experiments. Connor said, ‘The experiments were really enjoyable as I love practical work, so they were really fun to do, and it was nice to go on campus and see some of my classmates. It wasn’t ideal situation, but we made the most of it.’
Connor mentioned that although he had covered much of the material in his first year during his Highers that this time round, he found it much easier to understand as it was taught so well. He said, “The lecturers were all really lovely and they made sure we all knew what we were doing. If we ever had any issues, they always dealt with the problems excellently and had solutions to any problem.”
Connor’s advice to future students is to get organised – get a diary, plenty of folders and using your extra course payment at the start of the course - like he did - to get some extra equipment if you need it.
When asked if he would recommend the College Connor said, ‘Absolutely. The lecturers are really nice and if you are stuck at any point they have got different methods and way of teaching until you learn it.”
Next year Connor is continuing his education journey at UHI studying Engineering of which he says: “It is every part of the course that I like, plus building thrown into one. I have a place there already.”
