Forty-two-year-old Gabriella Sutera and her family relocated to Scotland six years ago due to her husband’s work. Having worked as an Environmental Science teacher in her home country of Italy, Gabriella decided she wanted to pursue a career here in Scotland working with young children.
Having only learned to speak English since her move to Scotland, Gabriella initially came to West College Scotland to study ESOL to improve her language skills before embarking on the Entry to Childcare course followed by NC and HNC Childhood Practice course.
Gabriella commented,
“Having improved my English with the ESOL course I was ready and excited to study Childhood Practice.
‘The course was very interesting, not only from a professional point of view, but as a mother – I’ve been able to apply some of what I’ve learned into my home life.
‘What I enjoyed most was the direct work experience. Being able to apply the theory learned in class into a practical nursery environment was incredibly useful and helped cement my knowledge.
‘The course was very well organised, and the lecturers are so passionate, kind, and available to offering support to every student. They transmit enthusiasm and passion for this work to the students. Even after the end of the studies, I kept in contact with some of them who are always available to give advice and suggestions when asked.
‘After completing my course of study, I worked for 6 months in a private nursery (Cunniesburn Nursery) as a Childhood Practitioner and then in a Local Authority nursery (St. Eunan’s Nursery West Dumbarton Council) where I now have a permanent job as Childhood Practitioner.
‘I am also thinking of applying for a BA in Childhood Practice or a Postgraduate Childhood Practice course to deepen my knowledge about children's education, but also to open future opportunities for myself and my career”
