Meet 30-year-old Gordon McNiven, an adult returner studying NQ Administration here at West College Scotland. Feeling unfulfilled in his job, he decided to take the plunge and return to education in a bid to further his career. Here Gordon tells us about his experience so far:
What made you want to study NQ Admin?
I was working full-time at Morrisons and felt as if I wasn’t going anywhere, I was unable to move up. I wanted to be able to do something new and felt that gaining a qualification would allow me to do that. Ultimately, I just want to be able to progress in life and get a good job.
What made you choose WCS?
To be honest it was the location. It’s local to me so it’s handy.
What have you enjoyed most about the course?
Just getting back into education and learning something completely different and new. I’ve also enjoyed getting to meet new people. Everyone is really nice, and the lecturers have been great.
Has there been any obstacles or challenges along the way?
It was difficult coming back into the learning environment having been away from it for so long, but I’m slowly but surely getting there. The lecturers have been good, which has helped.
What’s next for you?
I’m hoping to continue here at the college and go on to study at HNC level and from there make some career choices. I’m confident that this qualification will help take my career in a new direction and I’m looking forward to seeing where that is.
Any advice for future students?
If you’re unhappy in what you are doing, college is great for opening new doors. I’ve been able to study whilst working part-time which has been a bonus. For me it’s been a great experience and one I’d encourage others to do.
