Twenty-three-year-old James Stewart came to college lacking confidence in his ability but with some support, hard work, and determination, he quickly realised he can do anything he puts his mind to. Now at University studying Geography he‘s the ethos of what college is all about.
Speaking to James he said, “When I left school I thought I wanted to be a social worker but I didn’t enjoy the course, so I took a year off and realised that I enjoyed helping people similar to myself who struggled through to school due to adverse circumstances.
I didn’t have the qualifications I needed to go into teaching so I thought this was the best way to get a foot in the door and build my way towards teaching.
‘I was lucky enough to be able to go into secondary school for my placement.
It was a great opportunity to get some experience and hear about other people’s experiences which are different to mine.
‘The main challenge for me was focusing on deadlines, especially the essays for the literacy and communication parts of the course. The English classes were brilliant and really helped me as it’s something that I ‘ve always struggled with. Due to the support, I passed.”
Since completing the course James is now at university studying Geography and Social Science.
James continued, “The skills and knowledge I gained at college have helped me access university.
I thought I wasn’t smart enough for university but coming to college made realise that I am and that I can do anything I set my mind to.
‘My plan is to finish my Geography degree then do a one year post graduate in teaching with the aim if becoming a Geography teacher.
‘To sum up my college experience its been challenging but also fun and rewarding.”
