Originally from Derry, Ireland, twenty-nine-year-old Jannine Silo moved to Scotland initially to study Mechanical Engineering. But determined to pursue a career in teaching, Jannine joined the Colleges Clydebank campus to study NC Educations Support Assistant and is now well on her way to making her dream a reality.
Speaking to Jannine about her time at college she said, “I worked in lots of customer service jobs while tutoring and trying to get into teaching. I was certain I wanted to become a teacher, and I was always looking for learning opportunities so I applied for the NC Education Support Assistant course.
‘The support that I received form my tutors is what made the course. They really do go above and beyond, particularly Bernie and Christine.
I was extremely nervous about going back to study and the tutors created a very positive environment where we helped each-other through assessments and deadlines.
‘Something that worked really well was having placement alongside study as it allowed you to discuss your experiences in school with the rest of the class.”
Since completing the course, Jannine is now at Glasgow University completing her PGDE in Primary Teaching.
Jannine continued, “Gaining my NC Education Support Assistant qualification helped me gain access to university. The experience I gained during the course has helped me get where I am today. My tutor Christine gave me an excellent reference on my UCAS application and helped prepare me for my interview. I also attended a session delivered at the College that helped me with my UCAS application and my personal statement.
‘Next year I’ll be moving on to my probationary year and all going well I’d like to teach abroad for year or two, maybe in Spain.
To sum it up, college was the right choice!
