Twenty-eight-year-old Lisa from Cove swapped painting with the kids for a career in Painting and Decorating.
Having always wanted to pursue a trade, Lisa seized the opportunity when she saw a painting and decorating course targeted at females. Speaking to Lisa, she said, “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, but the timing had never been right with family life.
I was apprehensive because of my age and to be honest quite intimidated at the prospect of entering what’s predominantly seen as a male environment, so a course purely for women made it a lot more appealing.
‘I really enjoyed the course. The best part was learning alongside other women, who all had a common interest and goal. We were happy to listen and learn and we all felt quite empowered by the fact that we could do the job just as well if not better than anyone else.”
Having grown in confidence, Lisa is now studying Pre-Apprentice Painting and Decorating, Lisa commented “I gained a lot of new skills from the course, but I also gained confidence in myself and my ability to take on new challenges. Overall, it’s been a great experience and a journey that I’m glad I went on.
‘I’m really proud of what I’ve done so far, and I hope it can inspire others to do the same as there are no barriers when you have the drive to succeed. The next step in my journey is to secure an apprenticeship and hopefully one day be my own boss.”
