Aaliyah, Owen and Lauren are all current foundation apprenticeship students at West College Scotland; currently in their second years of the Creative and Digital Media programme.
When asked about why they chose the Foundation Apprenticeship Aaliyah summed it up by saying:
It was something that would make me stand out
Owen and Lauren agreed, with Owen commenting:
It gave me more freedom than regular school lessons. I was a tired of the regular format and this gave me a way to break free from it, while learning something new.
The Foundation Apprenticeship, allows pupils to come to college as part of their school week and provides a new innovative way for students to learn skills. The scheme started in 2016 and aimed to give students a new way to enjoy learning and bridge the gap between school and employment.
When asked about how they’re currently enjoying their Foundation Apprenticeships they commented saying:
We’ve really enjoyed it so far as it’s let me experience whole new things that I wouldn’t have even thought about in school. We've learned a lot through applying what we’ve been taught rather than just listening....
Foundation Apprenticeships offer a great way to get a foothold into a Modern Apprenticeship, and a gateway into getting great hands-on experience move onto further employment.
When we asked Owen, Aaliyah and Lauren what their plans were after their Foundation Apprenticeship, Owen said:
I plan on taking another modern or graduate apprenticeship and go further!
Aaliyah also commented saying:
I would like to go to college and do a graphic design course to develop my skills further
