Overview
What will I learn?
This course is for learners who have an interest in Childhood Practice. The course covers areas including Child Development, Play in Early Learning and Childcare, and Services for Children and Young People. This course is ideally suited for school leaver or adult returners. The course is taught using a variety of Learning & Teaching methods.
Our lecturing team who have a wealth of experience of working in the childhood practice field, will support your learning in the following areas:
- Child Development
- Child Development Theory
- Protecting and Promoting the Rights of Children and Young People
- Sociology of Childhood
- Planning for Practice
During this course you'll attend a work placement two days a week
What qualifications do I need?
You will need passes in four subjects at SCQF Level 5 band A-C, including English. Equivalent qualifications are also considered.
If you have successfully completed National 5 Skills for Work Childcare or NPA Playwork and Childcare or have achieved a Social Services Children & Young People Foundation Apprenticeship, your application will also be considered. Mature students can apply without formal qualifications.
For a place on the course, you will need to submit a personal statement and attend an interview, bringing proof of your qualifications. You will also need to provide two references.
You must be eligible to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
What can I do after?
After successfully completing this course, you will have the knowledge and skills required for support worker level.
Or you could develop your skills further by studying another course, such as:

- HNC Counselling
- HNC Health Care
- HNC Additional Support Needs

Duration: 1 year
This course will be delivered via a face-to-face learning on campus. There may be some opportunities for remote learning off-campus and digital learning approaches.
