Access to Medical Studies SWAP

Overview

What will I learn?

This new and innovative two-year programme is a combination of units from National 5 level (SCQF 5) to HND (SCQF 8). Specifically, you will study Biology units ranging from SCQF Level 5 – 8, Chemistry units from SCQF Level 5 – 7, Physics units at Level 6, National 5 and Higher Maths units and Communications at Level 6.

The course also aims to provide you with the academic and personal skills required to study Medicine at University.  This will include completing:

• SWAP Preparation for Higher Education modules
• A work experience unit
• Personal development units including Meta Skills for Medicine as well as UCAT and interview preparation.
• A medical issues research unit.

What qualifications do I need?

The Access programme is not intended for school leavers or graduates and all candidates should have been out of education for 3 years if you studied at National 5 Level and 5 years if you studied Highers.

Applications from SWAP Access to Science courses are also welcome.

The personal statement on the college application is an important part of the application process and you must provide detailed information on relevant life, educational and any employment experience, as well as showing a genuine interest in studying the subject.  This should also include skills you have for studying the course.

Those with English as a second language or other language must have Higher ESOL.

What can I do after?

The SWAPWest Access to Medical Studies is run in partnership with the Scottish Wider Access Programme.

Successful completion of the two-year SWAPWest Access to Medical Studies programme provides an entrance qualification to study MBChB Medicine at the University of Glasgow. 

In addition, the programme provides a broad range of progression routes to: Pharmacy at Strathclyde University, Biomedicine and Oral health at Glasgow Caledonian University, and various Life Science Degrees including Anatomy, Bioscience, Forensic Science, Neurochemistry, Biomedical Science and Genetics with SWAPWest university partners, UWS, Stirling and SRUC.  

Medical Degrees at Edinburgh and Aberdeen Universities are also available. Successful students can also progress on to a range of HNC Science courses at our Greenock Campus following successful completion of the first or second years of the course.
