What will I learn?
This course has been designed in agreement with The University of Glasgow, to allow successful students to progress to the second year of various Life Sciences degree programmes at the University. You'll learn about:
- Microbiology
- Chemistry
- Cell biology
- Biochemistry
- DNA and genetics
- The human body
- Statistics
- Maths
As part of the course, you will also be enrolled as a University of Glasgow student, attending sessions run at the University of Glasgow campus throughout the HNC year.
What qualifications do I need?
This is a Widening Participation programme. To be eligible applicants must not previously have completed an undergraduate degree, and must meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Be Scottish domiciled, residing within a target postcode area (SIMD, deciles 1-4)
- Be care-experienced
- Be estranged and living without family support
- Have caring responsibilities

In addition, applicants must meet the academic entry requirements for the HNC Applied Science. For this you’ll need two Highers at grade C or above, from Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry or Maths OR an NC in Applied Science (SCQF level 6) with academic reference/profile, or Access to Science Qualification with academic reference/profile. Due to the maths content of this course those without Higher Maths must be able to evidence their ability in this area. This could be through various means eg Nat 5 Maths at Grade A or through other relevant units
You’ll be asked to attend an interview for a place on this course.
What can I do after?
This course guarantees successful students direct entry into Year 2 of various degrees within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow: School of Life Sciences
