Why study at West?
Kick start an exciting career in the Sport & Fitness industry at West! Our wide range of courses are delivered across our 3 campuses and externally, partnered with our local sports centres in Renfrewshire, West Dunbartonshire and Inverclyde, offering sector leading fitness facilities.
Our highly qualified lecturing team possess a wide range of extensive industry experience working with a broad and varied category of athletes, sporting activities, client groups and levels from professional to keen enthusiast.
Although our Sport and Fitness courses offer you an alternative to conventional classroom learning, we don’t just cover the physical side of things. You will also gain an extensive range of knowledge and understanding in a variety of disciplines, whilst promoting and enhancing personal skills such as planning, organisation and communication skills. We work closely with industry partners across all three of the campus regions promoting health, fitness and wellbeing, offering live sessions to our community groups. This can only enhance our students experience on their learning journey.
Graduates from our course have gone on to work in the Sport and Fitness industries for many leading organisations across the West of Scotland and beyond.
What will I learn?
HNC in Sports Coaching and Development gives learners the knowledge and skills necessary to work as professionals within the sector. This HNC includes an embedded, stand alone, industry-recognised Professional Development Award in Sports Coaching at SCQF Level 7 jointly certificated by SportScotland and the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

- Sports Coaching Practitioner: Knowing Yourself
- Sports Coaching Practitioner: Knowing Others
- Sports Coaching Practitioner: Knowing Coaching
- Sports Coaching and Development: Graded Unit
- PDA in Sports Coaching
What qualifications do I need?
You'll need two Highers including English or a Higher with literacy content, or have successfully completed NC Sport and Fitness: Level 5 (SCQF level 5), Access to HN Sport (SCQF level 6), or NPA Level 6 (SCQF level 6). Relevant qualifications from other national governing bodies and work experience will also be considered.
What can I do after?
After successfully completing this course you’ll have the skills needed to get a role in a leisure centre, gym or swimming pool, and to apply for coaching positions.
From HNC you could progress on to HND or access a range of Degree level courses at Universities across Scotland and the UK (entry point at year one or two) in relevant subject areas such as Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Studies, Coaching and Developing Sports, Physical Education or Physical Activity and Health related studies.
